Buying premium meat in bulk for your weekly needs? Here's how to store frozen meat to maintain its quality until consumption:
1. Correct Freezer Temperature
Ensure your freezer maintains a consistent temperature of -18°C or colder. Avoid frequently opening the freezer door.
2. Divide into Small Portions
Before storing, divide the meat into single-meal portions. This prevents repeated thawing and freezing, which can damage the texture.
3. Vacuum Packaging
If possible, use a vacuum sealer to reduce air exposure — this extends shelf life and prevents freezer burn.
4. Label with Date
Mark each package with the purchase date and type of meat. Consume according to the FIFO (first in, first out) principle.
5. Correct Thawing Method
Transfer from the freezer to the chiller (2-4°C) 12-24 hours before cooking. Avoid thawing at room temperature — this can be hazardous to health.
How long does it last?
- Beef: 6-12 months
- Minced meat: 3-4 months
- Sausages & processed meat: 1-2 months
